I recently did some product shots for a restaurant, and took three invaluable tools that make all the difference: tripod, cable release and 5 in 1 reflector. The final touch was a cheap Yongnu flash. I couldn't have been more delighted with the results.
I was shooting food and drink that day and below is one of my cocktail shots. It is worth bearing in mind this was shot in the client's restaurant, not in a studio.
Here I used a north facing window to illuminate the cocktail from behind so swapping the restaurant backdrop for celestial light. I used an off camera flash to my left and held a 5 in 1 reflector to the right in my right hand while triggering the camera with a cable release in my left hand. The tripod is invaluable not only to provide stability to the camera to prevent camera shake, but also to free up my hands to hold the reflector. 5 in 1 reflectors, available on Amazon for less than £15 really make a difference and together with the window and off camera flash, the reflector effectively provides a third light source giving a beautiful all round illumination.
This blog is a mix of many things, with articles on the technical side of photography, equipment reviews as well as simply presenting pictures which are favourites of mine.
